VK3/VC-032 and VK3/VC-019
Activated VK3/VC-032 & VK3/VC-019 Sun Jan 2012.
This is a new summit for 2013. Close to home a 4 pointer. In Wombat state forest so took Darcie. No KRMNPA here.
Take Ballan-daylesford Rd. Right at Mineral Springs hotel into Spargo Blakeville Rd. Gravel but good. The signs did’nt match my maps but Camp road was there ~3k down. Biggest intersection and signed. Gravel and typical logging tracks. Can drive to summit. Good parking 500 down hill at “Blat Camp”. Two Fireplaces .
There is a clearing on the top. The area is regrowth so still need height. Dipole worked 100%
Took APRS but didn’t take the external battery. When in the field I run the transceiver in the car on a separate battery. Don’t want to drain the main battery and have some SLA’s that will run it for days if need be. I have found the use of the car as an APRS repeater has takes it from patchy to reliable. Example of patchy above. No simplex 2m contacts. Setup beam but no gain over handheld. Suspected damaged coax on site and confirmed at home. Could contact repeaters from VK3RMM to VK3RWA on handheld.
Managed to activate before UTC. Got up at 23:57 and managed to contact 6 dedicated chasers before UTC day. 11 after with 5 common. Excellent signals for all! This is a good spot.
VK3/VC-019 (Mt Warrenheip)
Easy access as off the freeway with a sealed road to top. Ridge runs along the top. Three coms towers. Power runs the length of ridge. Heavily treed. Grass full of weeds. Drive to top and park in sealed car park. Can go left or right to get between towers. I go left and run dipole along the track line parallel to power lines
Good signals with reported QRM. Solid S3 pulsing background noise. 11 contacts. Left to pick up the kids on time but not home early enough to catch VK3MC/P.
