Dipole Yes. APRS No. KRMNPA – Mount Buffalo NP

Whilst have been exposed to snow in earlier activators, this is the first with serious snow conditions. Activated with Phani, a friend also interested in walking. We had walked Nepal together.

It went according to plan. Actually better than planned as expected harsher weather and maintained expected times. We had clothing for wet cold conditions and were also prepared to bail out if the conditions changed.

First was VK3/VE-014 The Horn. Access from main road. Parking was cleared of snow. Nice quick climb as only 1Km just zig-zagging track. No view. The squid pole collapsed once got it up. 20 contacts including 2 S2S. The wind picked up on the Hump so packed up and proceed to the Horn. When it was time to bring down the squid pole had frozen. Ice was all over it. Walked out. No issues.

The road to VK3/VE-014 The Hump is blocked at day visitor centre. There were families playing in the snow. Lots of tobogganing. Parked the car here and set off to walk down the road. We only saw two skiers the whole day. The track had been groomed and whilst the thicker snow was tiring it was simply a case of walking. 3.5 k along the track then another 1.5k up track to the summit. We were able to follow tracks as another hiker came out just before starting to go up.

Visibility was down to 100m. The tracks are easy to follow with a few rocks to go around. The squid pole served dual purpose as acted a a snow depth checker and edge finder on the track. The snow was coming in and we were happy to activate and get down and out for the day.

Can walk in 5cm snow but tiring. Will be using snow shoes in the future.

It got down to -2 but overall quite comfortable.

The battery went flat in GPS on the second activation. Didn’t change as didn’t want snow in backup bag and even in snow the tracks were easy to follow. Actually had enough to do just checking snow depth, rocks and avoiding frozen vegetation.

41 contacts all day with 3 Summit to Summit.

This was a good day. The highest scoring day i have ever had with 26 points for my trouble.
